POLICY/SYSTEM CHANGE

Over two decades of evidence driven policy advocacy has led to evident ripples of system change.

POLICY/SYSTEM CHANGE For the coming 5 years, our goal is to nudge stakeholders towards a universal design for media access and lifelong reading and learning. We shall partner with the central and state governments, private TV networks, and streaming platforms to bring about this system change.

RESEARCH EVIDENCE

BIRD pioneers in the impact of SLS on literacy and language learning across the globe.

Eye-tracking studies have shown that SLS exposure causes automatic and effortless reading practice even among weak readers. Impact studies have found compelling evidence that regular SLS exposure results in improved reading outcomes among children and adults. Our ongoing research among a diversity of low-income G&W has found enthusiastic response to SLS, especially among mothers who immediately see its value as an aid for reading and importantly, as an intuitive assessment of their child’s ability to read.

ON-GROUND STORIES

We took SLS to school children, to different states and to women and girls in remote India. Here’s everything we found out.

Young girls and women speak of SLS

Studies have shown that girls and women watch more TV than men and boys. Girls and women are also deprived and isolated from education very early on. This can change if a means of automatic reading is made avaialble with Same Language Subtitling on television. We’ve seen in our evidence research that women become more independent and confident with improve abilities of reading.

SLS helps improve state literacy

We’ve worked in states like Gujarat, Bihar and Punjab to gather the media consumptions patterns amongst children in the state. In our partnerships with these states, the conversation is driven around bringing SLS on state language as well as in the aspiring langauges in the state. Such as English.

Children love SLS

Same Language Subtitling can help in early language acquisiton as well as to bridge the langauge gap between home language and school language. This can help a child get a kickstart for academia as well as improve and inculcate reading habits. Children respond positively to SLS and have shown an improved recall capacity after watching educational videos/ sotries with Same Language Subtitling.

DHH COMMUNITY

In 2019, SLS became a part of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting’s (MIB) Accessibility Standards, under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. It was built on the advocacy of the rights-based groups and BIRDs’ evidence-driven policy advocacy over the past two decades. Our work has driven national broadcast policy which mandates SLS on 50% entertainment content on television by 2025, in every language, state, and channel.
